San Diego

1-30-12 to 2-4-12

Although we have been to San Diego a couple of times before, we had never been to the Midway Aircraft Carrier Museum. It was interesting for both of us.
The Star of India was docked close to the Midway.

The USS Midway is now a museum, after serving 46 years from its commission in 1947 to its decommissioning in 1992.

Sandy said she wasn’t so sure she could live in such cramped quarters, unless she was an Admiral or the Captain.

The enlisted men are bunked three deep. It looked like the sleeping area was no more then 2 ½ foot high.

This is the #2 engine room control panel. There are three more like this with each engine producing 53,000 HP for a total of 212,000 HP. The engines are so huge they only turn about 200 RPM.

Look at this row of toe stubbers (Sandy learned the hard way) and head knockers (John L. better wear a helmet).

Lots of toe stumblers and head knockers.

The machines at the trade school I went to used the same equipment-WWII surplus. However, the equipment was new when the Midway was commissioned, just after the war ended in 1945.

The following planes are of couple of the type that would have served on the Midway at some time or other.

On one of the evenings a classmate of mine invited us over to their house for a visit and dinner. Here are Rita (Cleveland) and her husband, John. They have a lovely home that sits high on Mt. Helix and has a grand view to the east looking at the mountains. We were remise in not taking any pictures of their view. Here are Rita and John.

On one of the last days in Ramona we spent the day doing laundry and going for a walk on the trails in Dos Picos.

On the last day in Ramona we drove to Julian to see the old mining town in the mountains east of San Diego. It is now a tourist area that has about a three block long main street with shops, hotels and eating establishments.

Julian, Ca.

Or, was it to pick up a pie from the Julian Pie Company?
