THANKSGIVING, CHRISTMAS AND HEADING SOUTH. FIRST STOP SAN ANTONIO, TX.

11-27-2014 thru 1-5-2015

Sandy’s parents and her brother-in-law came on Thanksgiving day. Sandy’s sister, Cindy was not able to make the trip because she became sick the night before. Sandy prepared a delicious Thanksgiving dinner for us.

We got a lot of visiting in with the family and Sandy prepared a ham for dinner on Friday. Then after dinner, John, Erwin and I went up to the garage to check out the “toy” storage.
After breakfast John and Sandy’s parents left for the drive back to Aberdeen. Too bad they could not stay another day.

We spent December 19th and 20th at Staples for an early Christmas. This is the year that most of the kids will be spending Christmas with their in-laws so on Saturday Becky had everyone that  could make it over for dinner and visiting. Glen was in Arizona and wouldn’t be back until the 22nd.

We went to Aberdeen to spend Christmas Eve and Christmas with Sandy’s family.

On Saturday after I got up and took care of the 3-4 inches of snow we got during the night. We finished packing and loading the RV for the winter trip south. Then in the evening we went to supper with our friends, Pat and John.

On Sunday December 28th after having breakfast with friends Jerry and Donna, we hit the road for San Antonio, TX. We had 3-4 inches of snow the day before, but the roads were clear for us to leave.

We stopped the first night at the Peculiar Park Place RV Park in Peculiar, MO, about 20 miles south of Kansas City. It was 454 miles.

The second day we drove from Peculiar, MO to West, TX where we stopped at the Waco North RV Park. Along the way we stopped a Wal-Mart and this cardinal came by and greeted us.

The third day we left West, TX and drove to San Antonio where we pulled into the Blazing Star RV Resort where we are staying until January 6th when we will start working our way to Phoenix.

For New Years Eve our friends Manuel and Connie invited us over to their new home for what was to be a simple Chili and corn bread supper at 4:00 PM. It turned out to be a lot more with beef and chicken tamales, soft and crisp tortilla’s plus dessert. We left their place around 8:30 after much visiting and reminiscing. Then it was home to listen to the New Years fireworks that continued until 3:00 AM.

We spent the next day , January 2nd  driving over to Goliad to see the Presidio La Bahia (Fort by the Bay). It was built along the coast in 1721 but has been moved twice, the last time in 1749 to its present location about 60 miles inland. This place, Presidio La Bahia, is known because Col. James Walker Fannin and 341 men under his command were executed a week after their capture (surrender) at the Battle of Coleto Creek, under orders of the Mexican dictator, General Santa Anna. Now this was just 3 weeks after the Battle of the Alamo. This battle more than any other event in the Texas Revolution proved to the people what manner of warfare confronted the Texans. A war with a dictator who took no prisoners – a war of extermination. This lead to many from the United States to volunteer to help fight for Texas.

The building inside the walls of the Presidio is the Our Lady Of Loreto Chapel that was built in 1779 and is still in use today.

The Mexican Army just left the bodies lay where they fell. It was not until 3 months later on June 3rd that the Texas Army came and buried the bones in this mass grave.

On Sunday Manuel and Connie took us to Fredericksburg where we visited the Admiral Nimitz Museum. Admiral Nimitz was the Commander in Chief, Pacific Fleet and Pacific Areas during WWII. The Nimitz Hotel was owned by Admiral Nimitz’s grandfather Charles Nimitz. The hotel held a Museum showing the time line of Admiral Nimitz’s life and his family.

These wooden shoes were worn by Admiral Nimitz’s great grandfather.
I guess these are better than walking with bare feet.

It’s amazing how some people get larger than life after their passing.

Also attached to the Nimitz Museum is the National Museum of the Pacific War. There is a lot to see in here and would highly recommend it.
A B-25 bomber like Doolittle used when he took off from an aircraft carrier to bomb Japan. We saw a video that showed the takeoff and is was amazing that they made it off the deck.

After 4 hours of walking around the Museums, we needed some nourishment.
We originally met Manuel and Connie about 7 years ago in Quartzite, AZ. They also visited us in Minneapolis about 4 years ago. It’s always nice to reunite with friends we have met through our travels.

Thanks Manuel and Connie for spending the time with us.

We are headed to Tucson and should be there on the 7th to spend a few days.

Until next time,

Dave and Sandy
